Finding Hope Again | Psalm 62
Finding hope when you feel beaten down is tough. When humans have failed us, our instincts are to lock everything down: trust no one, rely on no one, hope in no one.
But that’s exactly the time when we need to shift our focus. Humans will fail us. Systems might have cracks in them. Promises will be broken. But David reminds us in Psalm 62 after he was chased, lied to and let down, he remembered where to place his hope:
How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down—
this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
Surely they intend to topple me
from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
but in their hearts they curse.
Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
Our hope comes only from God. When we put our hope in Him, He becomes our fortress. One definition for a fortress is: “a person or thing not susceptible to outside influence or disturbance.” That’s what we need, mommas.
Then with our hope firmly in place, this psalm ends with two promises that are good for me when justice seems hidden from view:
One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,
and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;
and, “You reward everyone
according to what they have done.”
Those are promises to go to sleep by. Rest my soul. My hope comes from Him.
